The NHS continues to face economic crisis, and management are being forced to look at potential cost savings − having already trimmed and trimmed again. Perpetually reviewing processes to find efficiencies feels like a trajectory of diminishing return. This is where technology can be employed effectively to gain efficiencies in resource intensive processes. Many hospitals are already benefitting from a number of Winscribe’s productivity tools, but new innovative technology is available which could give staff tools to be more productive whilst also contributing to patient safety.
At the Winscribe Healthcare User Conference in October 2014, it was inspiring to hear how Winscribe Text is being used in some NHS Trusts to produce clinic letters, discharge summaries or reports, and it typically reduces document turn-around time by up to 30% when compared with traditional dictation processes. This is coupled with the benefits of a full audit trail for every item dictated and the ability to spot bottlenecks using straightforward reporting tools. Deployment of Winscribe Text has contributed to Trusts meeting their CQUIN targets for production of clinic letter and discharge summaries. In addition, Winscribe Text provides the Trust with a single repository to store all documents created, allowing staff to edit, sign and view documents and then easily access them in the future. Winscribe Text can also aid document distribution through automatic delivery to multiple locations. Improved production speed, a single repository and automated, secure delivery all enhance patient safety.
Although Trusts still have to gain further efficiencies, Winscribe’s integrated mobility platform allows clinicians to dictate using their mobile phone or tablet saving on the need for separate, trust-provided digital dictation devices. The simple to use app can be downloaded on iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phones. Clinicians find themselves free to dictate in any environment and sync their work whenever a signal is available. This has helped many clinicians make effective use of otherwise unproductive time.
Winscribe’s latest innovation and updated Winscribe Speech Recognition (WSR) solution is the one I am most excited about. This revised version will see the speech recognition element of its solution compatible with almost any software on a user’s desktop without the need for integration. WSR now allows users to speak into a microphone and their words appear as text wherever they have positioned the on-screen cursor. Unlike many speech recognition products, WSR truly “floats” across multiple applications (such as Word, Excel, Outlook or even an electronic patient record) using a single user profile, and I envisage it benefitting any staff who spend a lot of time typing − be it emails, reports or letters. Using a single speech recognition tool across multiple applications will speed up the time users invest in “training” the software to recognise and correctly transcribe their speech resulting in a more rewarding and effective transition into regular use.
